1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider by Touring

Introduced at the 1962 Geneva Salon, the Alfa Romeo 2600 was the marque’s flagship six-cylinder grand tourer. The Spider featured elegant open coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan and was produced in relatively limited numbers.

Completed on 20 March 1963, this example was dispatched to the United Kingdom the following month and subsequently converted to right-hand drive by Ruddspeed of Worthing as part of a limited number of factory-approved conversions. It was delivered to its first owner in Shropshire in September 1963, who retained the car for approximately 25 years.

The Alfa subsequently passed to P. King, beginning another long period of ownership lasting approximately 20 years. During this time, principally between 2004 and 2010, the car underwent an extensive programme of restoration and mechanical refurbishment.

The work covered the engine and five-speed transmission, suspension, steering and braking systems, together with the bodywork and interior. Koni adjustable dampers were fitted, the carburettors and associated ancillaries attended to, numerous seals and rubbers renewed, a replacement black hood fitted and the interior retrimmed in Claret.

In 2018, DTR European Sports Cars carried out a further substantial programme of recommissioning, including servicing and work to the carburettors, engine set-up, suspension and braking systems, together with further cosmetic attention.

In 2019, an EZ electric power-steering system was professionally installed, together with improvements to the clutch operation and suspension geometry.

The current custodian acquired the car in 2020, becoming its fourth owner from new. Since then, it has continued to receive regular maintenance and mechanical attention, together with a significant recent programme of paintwork improvement.

In 2020, Hardy Engineering stripped and rebuilt the five-speed gearbox, fitting new bearings and seals and attending to the synchromesh and hubs.

The car is accompanied by a substantial history file documenting its restoration and maintenance over many years. With four owners from new, rare Ruddspeed right-hand-drive specification and a considerable record of expenditure, it is a well-documented example of the 2600 Spider.
