One of just 37 examples manufactured by AC Cars Group at the Brooklands Factory, CRS9518 combines the rarity of the carbon-bodied CRS with a documented, period-developed 500bhp-plus specification.
Launched by AC Cars at the 1999 London Motor Show, a new chapter in Cobra history was written with the introduction of the Mk IV Cobra Carbon Road Series (CRS). The CRS was based upon the chassis and drivetrain of its aluminium-bodied stablemate, the Superblower, retaining the lineage of the four-inch ladder chassis employed by the 427 MkIII of the 1960s, but with a distinctly modern twist: an all-carbon-fibre body, developed through a collaboration between AC and Kid Jensen Racing, the successful F3000 team.
The CRS featured a 5.0-litre fuel-injected V8, developing 225bhp at 4,200rpm and giving a quoted power-to-weight ratio of 211bhp per ton. Performance was suitably Cobra-like, with 0-60mph achieved in under 5.5 seconds. A five-speed manual transmission, Hydratrak limited-slip differential, independent front and rear suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes — with four-pot AP Racing calipers and ventilated front discs — completed the specification.
This particular motor car, chassis CRS9518, was sold new through Nick Whale Sports Cars and has subsequently been developed considerably beyond the standard CRS specification. Its history file documents extensive work to the 5.0-litre Ford V8, including forged pistons, an Anderson hydraulic roller camshaft, Trick Flow aluminium cylinder heads, Holley Systemax II induction, an Edelbrock 90mm throttle body and Vortech T-Trim supercharger. Further upgrades include 42lb/hr injectors, twin fuel pumps and a Hayward & Scott stainless-steel exhaust system with removable racing catalysts.
The effectiveness of this work was demonstrated on the rolling road in March 2008, when Track’n’Road recorded 521.9bhp, transforming CRS9518 into a considerably more potent interpretation of AC’s original Carbon Road Series.
The accompanying history file demonstrates continued specialist servicing and maintenance throughout its life, alongside the documented performance development.
