1966 Aston Martin DB5 - Sold-
To the casual observer, the 1963 DB5 is virtually indistinguishable from a late model DB4 Vantage; the DB5 is essentially a four litre version of the DB4. Initially fitted with the four-speed David Brown gearbox, the vast majority of cars received the superior five speed gearbox either as an option or later as standard fitting. So why is the DB5 so often thought of as the quintessential Aston Martin?
Without doubt, this is due to a Silver Birch example featuring in the 1964 James Bond film, Goldfinger, complete with modifications and hidden weaponry. With 007 behind the wheel of the sensational sports GT, demand outstripped supply - the factory just couldn't capitalise fast enough on the marketing success of the DB5. Even today, DB5's are highly regarded and change hands for sums significantly greater than almost anything else in the range. Its production, however, was fairly short-lived, ending in September 1965 after 1,021 had been manufactured.
Being neither a barn find or a restored example this car has been owned by the current owner since 2001, having purchased the car from Ian Mason, the renowned Aston Martin specialist previously based in North Kensington, London. Ian had competed with the car for many years with some success throughout the 70's and 80's before work commitments took over and the car was laid up. Naturally time took its toll and the car was sold to the third owner, in need of restoration; during the ensuing years the car was partly restored and is now offered in a condition ready to be finished, complete with all major components. Both mechanical and suspension parts are complete in varying degrees of condition with the rolling chassis and body prepared in an aluminium state to a very high standard, as seen in the photographs. The prospective buyer has a unique opportunity to complete the restoration process and return the car to the road to their exact preference and specification.
Supplied with a period correct engine and gearbox, this example is offered with a history file full of the original race history detailing results and entries, together with the UK V5 certificate, photos and newspaper cuttings. This is the perfect starting point for a DB5 restoration with provenance and quality at the forefront of the project.
