By the 1970s AC had stopped servicing Cobras, and Cobra mechanic Brian Angliss quickly stepped in to fill the void. With a strong customer base and good reputation, he grew close to the AC factory and was eventually able to collect enough original tooling, jigs, and body bucks from the Thames Ditton facility to fabricate new aluminium bodies, whilst also utilising the same tooling and jigs used to build the original Ace and Cobra bodies.
A new AC company was established as a joint venture with Ford, which began offering the AC Mk IV, a revival of the original Cobra, which ended production with the Mk III in 1967. These cars, built using the original tooling and the same materials as the originals, were praised for their exceptional build quality.
Following many similarities of the MKIII, placement of large ford powerplant, this time a 302 cu into the coil-sprung ladder chassis with a curvaceous hand formed aluminium body to suit.
Ultimately, approximately 480 Mk IV Cobras were built.
This motorcar, in particular, was first purchased by David Bennet and had been passed onto the second owner in 1998, over the two decades of the last custodian, it has been subject to a meticulous service record, returning only to specialists of the AC marque throughout this time
On the mechanical side, the power plant has been upgraded more powerful Ford 302 SVO, GT40 specification unit at circa 24,000 miles. In addition to this, the gearbox has been rebuilt at 34,551 miles and most recently the clutch at 37,352 miles. Further upgrades include the fitment of the front and rear anti roll bars.
The history file of this motorcar is extensive, including the initial purchase following the service record to date.
The Cobra has retained the Guardsman Blue body colour and Tan leather interior that matches our AC Factory build ledger (The Bible).
Lending a period feel with the addition of bullet racing mirrors and Wooden Rim Motolita Steering wheel, included in the cockpit is a battery cut off switch and four point harness for both seats.
The exterior follows suit with tri eared bronze spinners and 16 inch Halibrand Wheels.
All associated weather gear (hood, hood frame, tonneau and side screens) are present alongside the handbook and two sets of keys.
This motorcar has just been subject to Brooklands Motor Works service and inspection and is one of the highest standard MKIV Cobras, we’ve seen.
